Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) has adopted the  ACAC exam for
Certified Indoor Environmentalist (CIE) , CIEC and CMC  for applicants to become a State of Florida Licensed Mold Assessor.
.
.
.

“Assessors:

The department has approved the Council-certified Indoor Environmentalist (CIE) examination, the Council-certified Indoor Environmental Consultant (CIEC) examination, or the Council-certified Microbial Consultant (CMC) examination offered by American Council for Accredited Certification (ACAC) for purposes of mold assessor licensure. Applicants must achieve a passing grade pursuant to the requirements of the ACAC and Section 455.217, Florida Statutes.”

Mold News  (Mold Assessors for Federal Government projects "Must be CIH or ACAC Certified")

July 2011
The federal government has a “mold remediation” specification that specifies the use of assessors and contractors who hold certain certifications. CIH  or ACAC certifications,  CIE, CIEC, CMC, etc.
United Facilities Guide Specifications (USGS 02 8500.00 20 Mold Remediation).   http://www.wbdg.org/ccb/DOD/UFGS/UFGS%2002%2085%2000.00%2020.pdf

Sebring, Avon Park and Lake Placid consumers should hire Mold Assessors / Inspector that at least meet the minimum requirements the US government has for it's mold problems.

Most licensed Florida Mold Assessors were "grandfathered" and did not pass an ACAC exam required by Florida law. http://acac.org/certify/FL.aspx

         Considering Bioaerosol Sampling

http://www.epa.gov/mold/moldcourse/chapter7/lesson2.html

"remember that a negative sampling report must not be used in place of a visual survey. Factors such as barometric pressure, inside and outside temperatures, activity levels, and humidity may dramatically reduce or increase the spore levels within a building. Air sampling for mold provides information on what was in the air only for the moment when the sampling occurred. It is important, therefore, that sampling not replace visual inspection."

Can your Sebring inspector interpret your mold lab results?

http://www.epa.gov/mold/moldcourse/chapter3/lesson3.html

"Sampling for mold should be conducted by professionals who have specific experience in designing mold sampling protocols, sampling methods, and interpreting the results."   EPA

"Experience in interpretation of results is essential.”   EPA

A Sebring or Avon Park mold inspection report that does NOT identify the extent and source of any mold problem or include remediation recommendations based on Nationally accepted standards is of little use to a homeowner or a respectable remediation company.

A mold inspection / assessment should be performed by an independent company, you do not want the same company to identify a problem, fix the problem and then perform the clearance inspection (prove cleanup was done properly).  This is unethical and is against Florida law.

Radon & Mold Professionals

Sebring Real Estate Professionals should understand the rules affecting Home Inspections

Florida DBPR The state is getting ready to publish the Home Inspector Standard of Practice (SOP).

The SOP should be in effect within 90 days if it is not challenged. SOP describes what must be covered and penalties for Home Inspectors.
 FL SOP 2012.pdf (162.6 KB)
NOTE:Home Inspector License is different from a Mold Assessor License.

http://www.myfloridalicense.com/dbpr/services.html Home Inspector Licensed Needed:
  • "Advertising or representing oneself to be a Home Inspector."
  • "A person acting within his or her authorized scope of practice as licensed under federal, state, or local codes or statutes, except when such person holds himself or herself out for hire to the public as a "certified home inspector," "registered home inspector," "licensed home inspector," "home inspector," "professional home inspector," or any combination thereof stating or implying licensure"

There is a difference between licensed and competent. Just look around while you are driving! Over 250 licensed Mold Assessors locally, less than 20 have passed the State of Florida required exams, the rest were "Grandfathered".  DBPR : https://www.myfloridalicense.com/CheckListDetail.asp?SID=&xactCode=1030&clientCode=0701&XACT_DEFN_ID=13095 Individuals seeking licensure as a mold assessor must first take and pass one of the examinations approved by the department and administered by the American Council for Accredited Certification (ACAC), DBPR has chosen ACAC to provide the license examination required by Chapter 468, and has approved three ACAC certification exams for this purpose (CIE, CIEC & CMC): http://acac.org/certify/FL.aspx
